Gandi Baat...., & Charmme

What gained momentum with Dhamurakam and Naayak had its precedents in Mahatma. For most of our collective memories Ragada’s – ‘Garam Chai….’ was the Charmme’s coming-of-age act. Serving a singular purpose: Instant gratification. From playing lead to ‘item number’ Charmme has come a long way. Err, short way. Coming to think of it, popular item girl(s) got vaporized with mainstream actors getting into their skins. Remember Mumaith Khan’s ‘ippataki inka naa vayusu…’ Now you don’t even get to even see her. We all love these number. Even more when knocked out after couple of drinks. Technically speaking, ‘item girls’ as a character dances to a song and then never appears in the film. There is no backstory to the character. Unless of course you are charting The Dirty Picture course.    Moving on, Charmme’s trajectory as main lead hit breakpoint after few films. With on-and-off hits mostly in south films; punctuated with a two Hindi films Bbuddah… Hoga tera Baap (try hard you’ll remember) and Zila Ghaziabad. Foothold in Bollywood is taking sometime so Charmme is back to what she is good at – item number. So sit back and wait for an aggressively choreographed fast-paced Gandi Baat from R… Romeo. We are all so undiscriminating lovers of item numbers – it’s like going to a strip club. Look but don’t touch.

Doosukeltha is a commendable humour-a-thon

He started his comedy run with Dhee. Done some inconsequential films in between and then rounded it up with Denikaina Ready. Now Vishnu Manchu is in top form with Doosukeltha. Veeru Potla, the director, stitched up together a total entertainer which will make you laugh throughout, some scenes are perfect bang on considering Vishnu’s Comedy timing. You are sure to crack up on funny one-liners from Brahmanadam, Ali and Vennela Kishore.

Never mind the storyline – you’ve seen it many times but the taut screenplay is laced with all commercial ingredients. What to watch out for? Vishnu’s comic timing with Brahmanandam. Vennela Kishore is in for a long haul for sure after this movie. With his act you’ll only ask for more.

Lavanya plays the female lead. After her Plain Jane look in Andala Rakshasi she has upped her glamour quotient this time with Doosukeltha. All the pros and cons considered, Doosukeltha is a commendable humour-a-thon.  Go for it you won’t be disappointed.

When Power Star Gets Angry

Hrithik Roshan’s using 600 masks for Krrish 3 did make some news. Deepika being stopped from entering a dandia function at Ahmedabad – as protesters were ready with rotten eggs to be hurled - did cause a slight flutter in entertainment news.

But what made real headlines was when Power Star Pawan Kalyan got angry. With Attarintiki Daredi collecting 67 crores everyone associated with the movies can breathe easy. Ram Gopal Varma tweeted “Taran Adarsh is shocked as in his entire career he has not seen any film’s collection more than Attarintiki Daredi, only next to Hollywood movie.” Also another tweet read “Names like power star are too small for power star. He should be named Tsunami star.”

Wonder why stubborn Ramu is careful with his words. We know Satya -2 release is round the corner. We have also seen the trailers. We also remember what Satya (1998) was like. And we’ve also seen Telugu film Businessman. We rest our case.

The mostly silent Pawan Kalyan this time took to the stage at Attarintiki Daredi ‘Thank You’ function and said “Irrespective of the conspirators’ status, I’ll make sure that justice is done. If they think that we’ll forget about the issue as the movie turned out to be a hit, they’re mistaken. I’ll not forget it and won’t let it go. And this doesn’t end today. We will endure and if we needed I’ll fight back and tear their skin.”

Adding that he is silent due to the composed nature and not because of weakness or inability. Pawan Kalyan further said that his anguish and pain was not limited to just his films.

There is a marked shift in audience preference now. It is content that drives a movie.

Why the fuss?

m k sinu

This season Akshay Kumar has taken himself seriously. And why not, the makers of Boss are not leaving any stone unturned for promotion of the film. The other day he was in Hyderabad atop Charminar. It looked as if he emerged straight from the trailer after the roll sideways, forwards and then somersault on to Charminar.

Proof enough that Akki and the promo cuts had public curiosity. His fans club put the logistics in place for making the largest poster of Boss in the world - making it a this-is-it moment. Incidentally, Michael Jackson’s ‘This Is It’ held the Guinness World Record for being the largest poster till last month.

You’ve been seeing Boss being carpet-bombed all over the place; music channels, reality shows, hoardings, road-trips, shows, concerts, social media and just about everywhere. Yo Yo Honey Singh’s Party All Night is already in midst of controversy. All this events done ensuring it is media-seducing. Akshay’s last film did not quite cut the ice at BO, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara. The moot question. How much harm does hype and over-exposure do to a film?

This is director Anthony D’Souza’s next after Blue. The partly underwater opus was a damp squib at BO. Patently contemptuous of the audience taste. The stakes are high this time with Boss. The plotline is from Pokkiri Raja, a Malayalam film.

There is a marked shift in audience preference now. It is content that drives a movie. We’ll wait to see if Boss’ hype is worth the wait.

For every falling star in Bollywood there is a storywriter somewhere in south scripting a success story

Raja (Ranbir) Ko Rani (Deepika) Se Pyaar Ho Gaya

mk sinu

Achieving popularity is tough and retaining it tougher. No one better than Ranbir Kapoor can vouch for that now. Purely going by ‘Besharam’s’ tailspin at BO. The ascent of the Ranbir is what tinsel town stories are made up of. Tao was simple, experiment early in career and voila you’ve got a success as a way of life and grammar for stardom. Quick were critics and gossip magazines to write hosannas. Then the nosedive. He thought Abhinav Kashyap would pull off a dabanggesque equivalent rom-com. His act of peeing in the mustard fields humming “tujhe dekha to yeah jana sanam…” had the Khan fan bastion shaken. After the film released (and bombed) Ranbir is shaken.

For every falling star in Bollywood there is a storywriter somewhere in south scripting a success story. And this time it is A.R. Murugadoss produced, Atlee directed Tamil movie ‘Raja Rani’. Going by industry reports the movie worldwide collections stand currently at 42 crore.  A good-looking romantic comedy with great taste and modern urban sensibilities. Bollywood needs more such hit films. There is always a market. Karan Johar and his ilk dominated this space till now.

After the rumbustious chemistry of Ranbir and Deepika in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani the maker of Raja Rani wants to cast the duo. Don’t know if Deepika Padukone needs this now - with two back-to-back hits and a Sanjay Leela Bhansali opus up next. No harm if Ranbir signs the dotted lines.

The Real Star

The Real Star
August 15, 1964 – October 9, 2013

Sri Hari breathed his last in Leelavathi Hospital on the 9th of October – The actor who started his career doing negative roles, later on moved to do notable character roles. His portrayal of Sher Khan in ‘Toofan’ was liked by everyone, and the role arguably few would carry off with the same panache.  Tollywood Film Fraternity knows about ability to make a stranger seem a friend. Anyone who entered his aura returned with a gleeful warmth.

Sri Hari was admitted to hospital while in Mumbai shooting for Prabhu Deva’s upcoming movie R… Rajkumar.
